Compare TV Systems
There are various kinds of TV systems, and it can get pretty confusing if you read all the technical specifications and try to understand which one is the best for your needs. In layman terms, here are the most popular of those so you get it better.
• Analog TV – Analog is the TV we have all grown up with. When you pressed the video button of your TV or when you saw behind your Video player, you would have noticed ‘PAL’ and ‘NTSC’ mentioned there. These are systems in Analog TV, and all these years, it is these TVs that ruled the roost. While scanning for channels, you would have noticed codes like UHF, VHF, and so on. These were the transmission frequencies at which analog TV was transmit.
• Digital TV – Most of the new connections of today are of the digital version, and systems like Satellite TV have made the analog transmissions like cable obsolete. Many of our current TVs are based on the MPEG-2 system, and the same codec is also used in streaming video online, and that is why most of the TV channels are also available as TV on PC channels.
• TV on PC – The third and the one which is most exciting is the new TV on PC system. With a simple and easy to install software, it is now possible to watch thousands of channels from around the world, and that too without paying a monthly fee. The videos are streamed from free to air stations all over and are routed through to your computer. All you need is a good internet connection.
The future sure is exciting, and is certainly in HD!

Coming to the first question – does it work good; TV on PC is usually streamed in flash format, and even a decent internet connection will ensure that the telecast plays along pretty smoothly. With new improvements constantly happening in software versions like Macromedia Flash and Quicktime, you are sure of having your TV on PC experience constantly bettered. Get up and running in minutes (TV on PC)
If you are still watching TV the old fashioned way, and if you spend hours in front of your computer (like most of the people reading this article), you should really consider getting TV on your PC. No longer is this the old fashioned technology of TV coming through in frames. Today’s technology allows you to watch satellite TV in high definition instantly. There are thousands of channels (yes, you heard right – thousands is correct!) and access them at the touch of a mouse button!
The best thing about the new TV on PC – like with most of the new technologies – is that they are so easy to operate. Installation is a breeze, and you can get your PC tuned in just a few minutes. Since most of the software comes in an auto installer pack, you can get your TV on PC up and running in just minutes. Depending on your convenience and your preferences, you can choose between the different subscription options – like a pay once mode or the monthly recurring payment modes.
Most of the new technology available now allows you to watch an unending number of channels just by buying the software and installing it. You don’t need to pay anything once you get it up and running, and to get it too, you’ll end up spending less than $ 100! When you compare it with the monthly amounts you spend on watching cable TV or satellite TV at home, you will wonder how it is possible!

HDTV Basics
We are constantly bombarded with ads mentioning that the TV we see is ‘HDTV’ compliant or that the program is on HDTV mode. Most of us know that the abbreviation stands for ‘High definition television’ but our knowledge stops there. Here’s more about what HDTV actually stands for.
If we understand the term ‘pixel’, you will know that the higher the pixel count, the better the clarity of the camera lens and the picture coming out of it. Similarly, in a TV, clarity is counted in terms of visible lines of detail, and most of the common TVs can support a display of up to 480 lines. HDTVs can display up to 1080, and hence the clarity is much sharper than the common TVs we see.
There is also a version called 720p, which has a progressive scan technology. This ensures that the image is smoother and stays sharp even while in motion. But most of us face a problem. When we invest a few hundred dollars extra and bring home a HDTV, we don’t notice a significant change in image quality immediately. That is because most of the channels that we see are not HD ready. The telecast quality is probably of CD quality, while HDTV is beyond DVD quality. To notice the difference, play a DVD – preferably attached to a home theatre, and you will be stunned by the quality change.
With streaming videos on the net also getting quality lifts every other day, there are a few channels online that advertise HD programming. Even a few movie streaming sites advertise high definition imaging, and the difference is quite noticeable. All you need is a good internet connection, and you are all set!

TV on PC Basics
Here are a few basics that you should consider when you are thinking about TV on your PC.
· Internet Speed – The most fundamental point you should consider is the speed of your internet connection. To get TV on your PC, you need a connection that is fairly fast and certainly a connection that is reliable. Unlike the older times, videos of today don’t need too much bandwidth, and even if you have a connection giving a steady 512 KBPS speed, you should be able to get TV on PC without frame breaks.
· Hardware – Since you are asking your computer to multitask as a TV, consider upgrading it. A RAM of atleast 512 MB is recommended, and you should have a nice set of speakers – preferably one with a woofer, so that you can enjoy TV uninterrupted. The next upgrade you do to your PC should have a flat screen monitor of about 17” so that your experience becomes better.
· Service Provider – The most important thing you should consider is which TV on PC brand you are going in for. There are thousands of channels you can see, and depending on the service you choose, you will get or neglect a few categories. Read up a few reviews and get the one which you feel is the best. Most of the good ones charge you a one time fee of between $ 50 and $ 100, and there are no monthly recurring costs after that – it is free for a lifetime!
Spend a little time in advance, so that you will enjoy your TV on PC much better.

Why Watch TV on PC?
Nice question, but why not?
Every day, we are spending more and more time on our PC, and already our PC’s have replaced several other gadgets – like music players, movie players, calculators, appointment keepers, filing cabinets, and there are many more things that run from the PC USB hubs – including fans and coffee mug heaters!
Away from a computer, the most time you are likely to spend is in front of a TV, and most of us with laptops anyway carry our work in front of the TV – and we focus on neither.
For quite a few years now, technology companies have been trying to put the two together, and the result is PC on TV. Though it has been around for a few years now, the real success has only come in the last couple of years or so – when there was a bandwidth explosion and everything went onto broadband. No more frame cut displays and no more waiting for videos to load. And with time, the streaming became much faster. Today, a whole movie can be streamed online without any disturbances on a 512 KB connection.
Watching TV on PC has a few distinct advantages. Here are some of the most popular ones.
· No monthly billing – just install the software, and it is free for life
· Thousands of channels – If you have 500 channels on your TV and are happy, think about more than 5000 on your PC!
· Channels from around the world – even the ones that are not allowed to be shown in the USA
· And best of all, you can do all that without moving from in front of your PC!
Try it out, and you will find some advantages of your own!
