What is Unique about Inspired Children?
There are many good books, memberships, programs and resources out there for both parents and children. For example, there are programs that help children develop their mathematical ability, reading skills, general household skills or self esteem and artistic skills. Some are free and some are very expensive. Some are based on research and some memberships offer a variety of random practical helpful hints such as how to help your child improve their memory. However, in order for parents to help their children they need to first search for the information, buy or acquire it, then read it, understand it and turn it into a practical activity for their child.
All of this takes time - time parents don’t have.
Also, most programs and resources are quite specialised - developing one key skill. What is unique about Inspired Children is that we take a holistic approach to your child’s development across the 7 key areas of life.
Why ALL of the 7 Key Areas of Life are important
Providing your child with skills across each of the 7 key life areas will result in well rounded person providing a powerful foundation for life success. Missing life skills in any one of the 7 key areas puts your child at a disadvantage. For example, imagine if your child was a good learner but was unable to communicate their learning effectively. Imagine if your child had no understanding of how to be part of a community or the effect of their actions on the environment. Imagine if your child was accepted into university and moved out of home to study, but didn’t know how to budget or cook or clean. You can see how disruptive could that be to their studies and general well being?
So as you can see, your child needs skills in all of the 7 key areas of life.

The 7 Key Areas of Life…a little more
For easy reference each of the 15 minute activities have been color coded using the colors of the rainbow - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Each of the key skills is described in more detail below.

Personal power is about self esteem and resilience and relates to how a child ‘feels’ about themselves and what they ‘believe’ about themselves. A child who feels good about who they are and believes in themselves is more likely to try new things and pick themselves up and bounce back after a difficult experience.
A child who accepts themselves is less likely to want to be like others and more likely to discover what they can contribute and be the best they can be. A child who doesn’t feel good about themselves is less likely to try new things and is more likely to be defensive and insecure which often results in all kinds of negative behaviour, especially in difficult circumstances.
·Does your child have low / high self esteem?
·Does your child have low / high self confidence?
·Is your child resilient - can they bounce back after adversity or disappointment?
These 15 minute weekly activities help enhance your child’s self esteem, resilience and personal power.
LIFE SKILL 1 - PERSONAL POWER
Health and wellbeing covers the areas of personal and home cleanliness as well as exercise and nutrition.
Children can function more efficiently and effectively in a clean and tidy environment. The 15 minute exercises help parents systematically develop their children’s life skills in this area. A tidy room, washing dishes and generally helping out around the home are some of the skills your child will develop.
You are what you eat! Perhaps you have heard this saying. These activities also look at nutrition and food preparation. Imagine having a great helper in the kitchen and knowing that your child can prepare a healthy meal or snack and once they leave home that they will eat more than just 2 minute noodles!
Other 15 minute activities in this area include 15 minute exercise routines and explain the importance of exercise for general well being.
LIFE SKILL 2 - HEALTH AND WELLBEING
These 15 minute activities show you how to help your child develop a love for learning, manage money and start thinking about possible career and life directions.
One of the most important life skills for your child to develop is the ability and motivation to learn. How boring would your life be if you didn’t learn anything new? By learning you create opportunities and develop and grow as a person. Imagine how successful your child will be if they are effective learners. Imagine their future job flexibility if they enjoy learning new technology or, imagine the personal satisfaction they will feel by learning a new language and all of the doors it could open professionally. A love of learning provides the foundation for a successful and interesting life!
It may seem far away for your child now, but how often have you heard a child who is almost ready to go on to college say “I don’t know what I want to do”! A child needs to experience life and gain knowledge about possible fields of specialisation for their future. Why leave it to the last minute when you child has to decide what college they want to go to and what program to enrol in. The Inspired Children program provides your child with the opportunity to explore numerous vocations in the 15 minute activities.

LIFE SKILL 3 - EDUCATION, CAREER AND MONEY
Want even more information?
Social and Environmental Understanding explores the many facets of ‘sustainability’. We now know that in order to sustain the planet we live on for future generations - we need to start taking care of our environment NOW. How? By doing our part through recycling and minimising our environmental footprint. So it is really important that your child is aware of the social and environmental consequences of their own and other’s actions and understands how to act ethically.
In addition to developing and understanding of the environment, these 15 minute activities also explore why it is valuable for your child to see themselves as not just part of a family but a member of a community and a global citizen.
LIFE SKILL 4 - SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL UNDERSTANDING
These activities help your child develop effective communication skills and understand the dynamics of family and social relationships.
Communication and social skills need to be learned. Remember as a child being taught manners - when to say “please” and “thank you”? But effective social skills aren’t as simple as that. Understanding the complexity of social relationships between friends and family members and communicating effectively, requires more than just trial and error and a simple please and thank you. It requires instruction, experience, reflection and learning to become a more effective communicator and to enhance their social skills.
In the weekly 15 minute activities your child will learn essential social skills that will enable them to be with family and friends in a productive, harmonious and enjoyable way. They will learn how to cooperate and work in a group as well as understand when to lead and when to follow. Other valuable social skills include how to avoid unnecessary conflict and being overbearing and how to be a good communicator and listener. Building relationships is essential for creating a happy and productive life. Your child will also explore the history, dynamics and importance of family. PLAY

LIFE SKILL 5 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS AND RELATIONSHIPS
Everyone knows that most people are rushing, overworked and lack work/life balance. Many children are also busy with school, homework, sporting activities, social networking and the list goes on. Learning good life balance begins when you are a child.
These 15 minute activities are focussed on helping your child understand the importance of both play and relaxation in achieving life balance. The activities will help your child identify when they are overworked or tired and need to rest and include many relaxation techniques. The activities also highlight the importance of play, laughter and fun for general wellbeing.
You can make this weekly activity work for both you and your child! Relax and have fun! In this way you can model good work/life balance for your child.
LIFE SKILL 6 - RELAXATION AND PLAY
The ability to identify what goals are important and how to go about achieving them are fundamental life skills that support your child’s life success. For example, if your child is experiencing a difficulty in their life, identifying the difficulty and being able to set goals to overcome the difficulty allows your child to turn a negative situation into a positive one which is very empowering.
These 15 minute activities help your child to develop their imaginative skills and to discover what inspires them. The activities also foster skills like the ability to set goals, to imagine, create and visualise and develop the steps to achieve their goals.
Examples of the 15 Minute Activities
LIFE SKILL 7 - INSPIRED CREATIVITY
Topic for the day - self esteem
Self esteem is at the heart of personal power and life success so it is one of the most important things we can have in our life. When a child feels good about themselves, they think and act in a positive way. When a child feels bad about themselves they are more likely to think negatively and misbehave.
15 minute self esteem evaluating activity
Do you know how your child feels about themselves? This is not how you ‘think’ they feel but finding out so you know how they feel. Imagine how helpful it would be to know your child’s ‘level’ of self esteem, so this little exercise is a simple fact finding mission. It is not about making judgments or comments. It is not about ‘doing’ anything. Just be like a scientist or explorer and find out how your child feels about themself. If you have more than one child - do this exercise with each child separately.
Your role is to ask questions for 15 minutes and simply accept whatever answer you get with a “thanks for telling me that”, or “thanks for explaining/sharing that” or if you would like to know more, say something like “can you tell me more about that?” Be patient as it may take your child some time to find the answer from within if they haven’t really thought about it before.
Questions you could ask could include:
·What do you like about yourself?
·How do dislike about yourself?
·In general, do you feel good about who you are right now?
·Do you accept that everyone is unique and that you are different to others?
·How do you feel about being different to others?
·When you look in the mirror do you like who you see?
·What do you think is unique and special about you?
·Do you think you are loveable? What makes you loveable or what makes you not lovable?
·In your own mind, do you often say positive things (eg I’m smart, I’m funny, I like being me) or negative things (eg I’m stupid, fat, boring, ugly, an idiot) about yourself? If so what are they?
Remember - NO COMMENTS or JUDGMENTS - you are finding out information. When you are finished asking questions, thank your child for talking with you about this. You may like to share your feelings about how you feel about yourself (without judgment) too.
Keep a journal
Either at the time, or soon after while you can remember, write down everything your child says. Keep this for another time when we look at self esteem building! It helps you to know where your child is at now so you are able to help them grow into accepting and liking who they are. There are many ways to help your child build self esteem and personal power and as a member of inspired children you will receive helpful practical 15 minute activities!
Age appropriateness tip
Whether your child is 4 or 14 or anywhere in between, understanding their level of self esteem is important to you as a parent. You will need to keep your questions very simple for a 4 year old and they can be more sophisticated for a 14 year old. For example, for a 4 year old you might ask how do you like being “Emily or Lee or Ahmed” that is use your Child’s name to make the question clear. You could also ask …what are the best things about being “Emily or Lee or Ahmed”. Depending on the answer you may need to explain the question in a different way. Another question could be …”do you sometimes wish you were more like someone else”? You know best what your child’s level of understanding is and their capability. You can also adjust your questions based on your child’s answers. Remember you will be able to re-visit this activity as your child develops and matures. Just make a start now and see how you go. It is crucial to support your child to develop good self esteem a young age to create a strong platform to build on throughout their life.

PERSONAL POWER
Topic for the day - household cleanliness with a difference
An individual and a family can function much better and feel more positive in a clean environment, so knowing how to keep their home clean and tidy is a valuable life skill for your child to learn. Parents often think it will be quicker if “I do it myself” - and you are right - but only in the short term! In the long run, once your child learns the skills of cleaning - you will have help and they will have an important skill for life!
Cleaning - enjoyable and fun?
We all have to clean our house, so why not make it as enjoyable as possible! You can help your child understand that their ‘attitude’ to something is their choice - so they can go about cleaning in a resentful and grumbling way or make it fun, feel good about doing it and feel a sense of satisfaction once it is done. Children learn best when something is enjoyable and fun - actually so do adults - so give it a go!
15 minute cleaning activity- the dishes!
Teach your child to love the everyday cleaning activities by involving them in them in a fun way. Tonight it is cleaning up the dishes after dinner. Does your child help with this? If yes, is it willingly or begrudgingly? If not, why not? Isn’t this a valuable skill and a good discipline to learn?
Creative ideas for making dishes fun
Can you remember back to when you were a child and water and bubbles were so much of fun? Use that feeling to help you with this activity.
·Put on some lively music, then hum, sing and maybe even dance together
·Make a game out of stacking the dishwasher…sorting the cutlery into sections in the basket (all knives together, spoons - makes for very easy putting away) lining up the plates in height order.
·Making a production line - one person clearing and sorting one rinsing and one stacking?
·Talk about how important it is to share the cleaning tasks so that your child can learn to take care of themselves and to do it properly.
·Talk about how they can have a negative or positive attitude to cleaning up…much more fun cleaning up with a good attitude then a bad one! Best results if you role model this for them.
·Thank, congratulate and praise your child for a job well done! Acknowledgment and a ‘thank you’ can go a long way to helping your children feel respected and appreciated.
·Put up a reward chart for good helping. Once the right number of stickers or ü (pen checks) are completed reward your child and yourself! Even a small incentive can go a long way!
Doing cleaning activities together makes it faster and will create a happier, well functioning household where everyone shares responsibilities and rewards too.
Age appropriateness tip
It helps if you start this one when they are young. If your child is older and not so enthusiastic about the job, perhaps you can improve their participation and attitude if it can be part of their activities for pocket money or increased play time! The more you have fun with it and ‘role model’ the behaviour you’d like your children to learn the more likely they will learn it over time - be patient if they aren’t enthusiastic immediately. If your child is very young, you will need to supervise, help and guide them more closely and of course keep them away from the knives! Remember, the more children do something the better they will become at it.
There are many different ways to help your child learn personal and household cleanliness and these will be in the weekly emails!
